Applied Anatomy & Safe Technique

Understand what the body is being asked to do.

You do not need to become an anatomist. You do need enough understanding to perform, observe and teach each movement safely—especially when a learner is meeting karate-based technique for the first time.

Technique is not only its final shape. It is the complete pathway the learner's body uses to arrive, control and recover.

Practical—not clinical

Anatomy gives the Educator a better question.

Instead of asking only, “Does the technique look right?”, the Educator learns to ask what is moving, what is supporting the movement and where control begins to disappear. This helps the Educator adapt the task before poor organisation becomes speed, strain or discouragement.

One simple principle

Muscles move body parts around joints.

Skeletal muscles are attached to the skeleton. When they contract, they help move a limb or another body part around a joint. Muscles also work to stabilise a body part so that another movement can be performed with balance and control.

The Trainee's task is therefore straightforward: observe the movement, name the joint around which it occurs, identify the muscles producing it and notice which muscles or body parts are providing stability.

What moved?Describe the visible action of the limb or body part.

Around which joint?Name the joint where the movement is taking place.

Which muscles?Name the specific muscles creating or controlling the movement.

Each Basic Technique

Name the action, joints and specific muscles.

These concise references follow the original Programme 1 manual. Use them while watching, performing and discussing each technique. The practical demonstration will show how the listed muscles produce and control the movement.

Head Block

Movement action
The arm travels upwards and forwards while the elbow remains bent and the forearm rotates at the end.

Inner Block

Movement action
The bent arm sweeps across the body and the forearm rotates to complete the block.

Elbow Strike

The bent arm moves towards the side target while the legs lower and lift the body with control.

Front Punch

Movement action
The leading arm reaches forwards, the elbow extends and the forearm rotates to finish palm-down.

Reverse Punch

Movement action
The opposite arm reaches forwards as the trunk organises the cross-body action.

Knee Kick

Movement action
The thigh lifts at the hip while the knee remains bent and the foot is drawn towards the body.

The thigh lifts at the hip; the knee extends and retracts; the ankle holds the foot in position.

Worked example

Front Kick is a four-part control task.

The hip flexors lift the thigh; the quadriceps extend the knee; the hamstrings help control the return; and the gluteals, supporting leg and trunk preserve the movement environment. The educational task is not to throw the foot forwards—it is to own every stage.

Lift

Raise the knee from the hip while the supporting leg remains responsive.

Extend

Lengthen the lower leg only within a range that preserves posture and control.

Retract

Bend the knee and bring the lower leg back under control.

Return

Place the foot down deliberately and restore the movement environment.

The Educator's Eye

Observe before you correct.

Begin at Learning Speed and allocate as many beats as the learner needs. Watch one aspect at a time, describe what you genuinely see, and choose one purposeful adjustment. The aim is not to overwhelm the learner with anatomical vocabulary; it is to make the next attempt safer and more understandable.
